About Kyoko
Born in 1986, Kyoko Shirai is currently living in Raglan, New Zealand. Having moved here in 2011 after leaving Japan shortly after the nuclear disaster in her home town of Fukushima, Looking for a safe, clean and nuclear free country to set up a new life in, she, her family and dogs decided upon Aotearoa.
During her childhood, her mother took her on numerous trips to Native American Indian reservations in the U.S.A., where they organised workshops with various medicine men. Also similar trips to visit Kahuna in Maui have all influenced her artwork throughout the years. Her work draws on mother nature, animals, fauna, life experiences and indigenous cultures she has had contact and experiences with over the years.
